Under the EU-China Agreement on Geographical Indications, the first major bilateral trade agreement between the European Union and China, Mengding Mountain Tea has been granted protected status in the European Union. The agreement, whose signature was authorized by the European Council on 20 July 2020, ensures that 100 Chinese geographical indications are protected on the EU market, safeguarding the authentic agricultural heritage of both sides.
In the official annex to the agreement, Mengding Mountain Tea is registered as Mingdingshan Cha (item 148) among the first 100 Chinese products to receive EU protection. Four years after the agreement entered into force, the framework expanded in 2024 to cover an additional 175 geographical indications, further strengthening the shield against counterfeit products and guaranteeing European consumers access to genuine Mengding Mountain Tea.
As a regional ecological tea brand rooted in the Mengding Mountain high-altitude tea district on the edge of the giant panda habitat, PandaTea shares in this international quality passport. PandaTea's ecological promise -- zero chemical fertilizer, zero chemical pesticide, panda-manure organic fertilizer returned to the tea rows, the heritage three-roast-three-roll craft, and a hand-painted anti-counterfeit artwork on every tin -- echoes the authentic, protected character of Mengding Mountain Tea that the EU agreement defends.
The EU protection turns the leaf of the world tea culture holy mountain into a globally recognized, trust-marked product. For PandaTea, it means one more reason for international tea lovers to discover the genuine ecological tea grown in the hometown of the giant panda.
